Exploring the Artisanal Market
I had a wonderful time exploring the Salamanca Market in Hobart. Although I didn’t walk the full length of the market, I did make it to the section that I consider to be the heart of the market. Here, I found a wide variety of unique artisanal products made by local producers.
As I continued walking up the incline of the market, I noticed a shift in the stalls. They seemed to be less focused on showcasing products made in Tasmania and more on selling magical crystals and infomercial-type items. It was clear that the stalls were filled with trinkets and other things that didn’t quite align with the unique and handmade products I was hoping to find.
Feeling a bit disappointed, I decided to turn around and do another loop of the market. I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss out on any hidden gems that might be tucked away in the stalls I hadn’t explored yet.
Discovering Redlands Apple Schnapps
As I continued my exploration of the market, I came across a stall that offered tastings of various products. One item that caught my attention was the Redlands Apple Schnapps. I took a sip and was immediately taken aback by its strength. It was so unbelievably strong that I couldn’t even finish the tiny amount in the tasting cup. However, I couldn’t help but appreciate the tantalizing lingering flavor it left on the back of my palate.
Indulging in Bruny Island Cheese
One of the highlights of my visit to the Salamanca Market was a visit to the Bruny Island Cheese shop located in the Salamanca Art Gallery. I had seen this shop featured on the television show “Gourmet Farmer” and knew I wanted to try their delicious cheeses. Although I didn’t have the chance to visit Bruny Island itself on this trip, I was delighted to find their shop conveniently located at the market.
I couldn’t resist purchasing some of their delectable cheeses, and to my surprise, the shop attendant also threw in some ham for free. Unfortunately, I knew I wouldn’t be able to take the ham back with me to the mainland as it would expire in a few days.
Exploring Gourmet Delights
As I made my way towards Wursthaus Kitchen, a gourmet deli shop, I couldn’t help but notice the Fat Pig Farm stall. This farm is owned by the same people behind the television show “Gourmet Farmer,” and I couldn’t resist purchasing some of their bacon. The thought of enjoying their farm-fresh bacon was too tempting to pass up.
Regretting a Missed Opportunity
While browsing the market, I came across a stall that caught my attention with its amazing apricot jam. The flavor exploded through my taste buds with each bite, but it was one of the first stalls I encountered, and I didn’t want to carry it around with me as I continued to explore. Unfortunately, I forgot to go back and purchase the apricot jam after I bought some salmon quiche and salad from Wursthaus Kitchen. I don’t remember the name of the jam maker, but I do recall that their jars had a distinctive black label and they didn’t seem to sell plain raspberry jam.
Leaving with Delicious Treasures
Despite my regret over the missed apricot jam, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the Salamanca Market. I left with a bounty of delicious products, including various types of bacon, cheeses, and other goodies. I had prepared for my visit by bringing a freezer block that I had frozen at The Boat Shed and again in Old Beach. With my trusty cool box, I was confident that my perishable purchases would remain chilled throughout the following day and for the journey back on the Spirit of Tasmania.
In conclusion, the Salamanca Market in Hobart provided a delightful and unique shopping experience. From exploring artisanal stalls to indulging in local delicacies, there was something to satisfy every taste. I highly recommend visiting this vibrant market to discover the best of Tasmania’s local offerings.
